Meet the 2023 SELCO Scholarship Recipients

SELCO Steps Up Student & Educator Support

For 33 years running, SELCO has recognized outstanding high school seniors across Oregon by awarding them with scholarships to fund tuition, textbook, and school-related expenses.

2023 Metzler recipient

This year, SELCO awarded 19 students with $2,500 scholarships and an additional student who exemplified exceptional resilience, leadership, and dedication with the $5,000 Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship.

Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship Recipient

Every year we award one student with a Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship was developed in honor of Richard Metzler, a retired board member who served SELCO for over four decades. Metzler was also a director and supervisor of special education in Springfield Public Schools for more than 30 years.

This year’s Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship recipient is Nakayda Jacobs (pictured left) from North Eugene High School (NEHS). Nakayda was selected for her leadership, academic dedication, and perseverance. At NEHS, she was a member of the National Honor Society and the school’s Key Club. Jacobs now plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in natural resources from Oregon State University. Following school, she hopes to have a role in a field that integrates social and natural sciences.

Recognizing the 2023 SELCO Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations are also in order for the 19 graduating seniors receiving SELCO Scholarships. Not only do they all hail from Oregon high schools, but their backgrounds, interests, and hopes are as diverse as the communities they represent. There’s also another common theme: they hold the determination to transform challenge into possibility.

“To say this year’s recipients are impressive would be an understatement,” said Craig Carpenter, SELCO’s Senior Vice President of Lending & Business Banking. “Our hope is that the scholarships will help give these students a running start on the exciting futures ahead of them.”
