The SELCO Scholarship Program Turns 30

SELCO Steps Up Student & Educator Support

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the SELCO Scholarship program.

This milestone reflects three decades of SELCO’s commitment to supporting our community members—and that includes students. Since its inception, the SELCO Scholarship program has helped hundreds of students from every corner of Oregon. What began as a way of giving back has turned into one of our proudest traditions.

While we celebrate this milestone, we also want to acknowledge how abnormal 2020 has been for this class of graduating seniors. Schools went remote, and graduations looked a little different. Even during these unprecedented challenges, this group of resilient students found ways to adapt, lead, and reach their goals.

2020 SELCO Scholarship recipients

In 2020, it was vital to continue our tradition of giving back to students. And it was equally important to provide some normalcy by supporting them in this stage of their academic journey through our annual scholarship program. This year we awarded 20 graduating seniors with $2,500 scholarships.

“This year’s graduating seniors are facing unprecedented obstacles, and for that reason we are truly thankful that we are able to help this impressive group of students,” said Craig Carpenter, SELCO’s senior vice president of lending and business solutions. “Since teachers founded the credit union more than 80 years ago, SELCO has embraced education as a core tenet to its mission of improving the financial health of all its members. The importance of that mission is growing as the needs of our member-owners have increased during this most challenging time.”

Moving forward with purpose

As we reflect on 2020, these scholarship recipients remain a bright spot in an otherwise unusual year. Let this experience always be a reminder that, with determination, anything is possible. Congratulations, class of 2020 seniors. We are proud of you and can’t wait to see what’s next on your educational journey.
