2019 Marks a New Chapter for SELCO’s Scholarship Program

SELCO Steps Up Student & Educator Support

Since the inception of SELCO in 1936, it’s been a priority to give back to education—knowing our founders were educators themselves, looking out for one another.

This year we decided to reinvest in our students by increasing our scholarships to $2,500 per recipient. We always aim to do more for our local students, especially since they’re stepping into an important and exciting chapter of their lives.

“The recipients are an incredibly accomplished group of students, and the SELCO Scholarship Committee was again impressed with how many deserving applications we received,” said Laura Illig, SELCO’s Vice President of Marketing. “These scholarships are meant to make it easier for students to pursue the next step of their education, and we were proud to be able to increase the value of each scholarship this year. As has been the case since its founding more than 80 years ago, SELCO will continue to make education a key tenet of its mission to help members and their families reach their goals.”

During our SELCO Scholarship luncheon this year, we also asked a few recipients what advice they would give their future selves on college graduation day.

Cottage Grove High School’s Samantha May said, “Don’t forget who you are and your self-worth. No matter where I am, just to be proud of myself.”

“I would tell myself, don’t take life too seriously because every moment you get is a gift,” said Haillie Kolb from Grants Pass.

Kate Bakken from Springfield High School said, “Just keep going and know that you’re not done yet. There’s a reason you’re on this path, so don’t stop now.”

It’s truly inspiring to hear these students’ stories and plans, and even their own advice. SELCO is proud to support them in this chapter of their educational journeys.
