SELCO Scholarship applications hit an all-time high.

Two years ago, the SELCO Scholarships program began extending eligibility to vocational, non-traditional, and continuing students. The new approach really resonated in 2026, as the applicant pool surpassed every previous application cycle and brought more eligible students to the table than ever before.
This year’s 21 recipients—for one $7,500 Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship and 20 $3,500 SELCO Scholarships—come from various parts of Oregon, including Prineville, Bend, Eugene, Springfield, Junction City, Albany, Salem, and Dallas.
2026 Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship

This year’s Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship recipient is Peyton Caldwell, a graduating senior at Willamette High School in Eugene. This scholarship honors one student who shows exceptional perseverance and purpose in pursuing their education, reflecting the legacy of Richard Metzler, who served on SELCO’s board for over four decades and dedicated more than 30 years to Springfield Schools as a director and supervisor.
Peyton is heading to Oregon State University in the fall to study Animal Science, with a long-term goal of becoming a veterinarian specializing in livestock and equine medicine. It’s a path she’s been building since she was 5 years old, and one that has only grown sharper with time.
Her vision goes further than most. Alongside veterinary school, Peyton plans to earn her farrier certification, combining hoof care with medical treatment in a way that allows her to offer comprehensive, mobile care for horses and large animals. She’s especially drawn to serving sick or elderly animals and owners who struggle with transportation, bringing care to them rather than the other way around.
Stories like Peyton’s are exactly why we keep showing up.
Congratulations to each one of you on your academic achievements. We wish you the best on your academic journey.
