Behind the scenes with the 2024 scholarship recipients

SELCO Steps Up Student & Educator Support

An annual tradition for SELCO’s scholarship recipients is to invite them to our scholarship luncheon.

This year’s recipients step into the next chapter of their lives with drive, curiosity, and a desire to uplift our communities. Their dreams come alive in small moments, personal details, and the confidence they carry about where they’re headed next.

To get to know them a little better, we asked our recipients two simple questions: Where do you see yourself in five years? What’s your go-to study snack?

Carli DeGarlais from Cottage Grove imagines a future filled with care and calm. She sees herself working as a neonatal nurse and coming home to a golden retriever that matches her gentle spirit. When she studies, it is freeze-dried strawberries and Shirley Temples that keep her going.

Emma Nordstrom from Bend is also on a nursing path. She sees herself supporting young patients as a pediatric nurse. Her snack of choice is white cheddar Cheez-Its, the kind she can crunch through during long study sessions.

Jeyla Luvert from Springfield pictures herself completing her master’s degree in architecture and helping her community grow in thoughtful and accessible ways. When she studies, she grabs whatever looks good in the pantry.

Lucy Webster from Bend plans on taking a gap year after earning her undergraduate degree and is determined to move toward medical school with clarity and purpose. Frozen grapes and salt and vinegar chips give her the balance she needs when she studies.

Morgan Osburn from Eugene hopes to be deep in medical school within the next five years and still find time to play the violin. Her study snack comes from Trader Joe’s.

Victor Yanez from Eugene, our 2024 Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship recipient, sees himself working as a nurse practitioner in Oregon, serving families in the same communities that shaped him growing up. When studying, he reaches for Nerds Clusters to keep his energy up.

Each of these students brings something different to the table. Together, they form a group full of potential and ready to embark on their own careers and continue supporting their communities. Through the SELCO Scholarship program, we continue to help students pursue what inspires them and build futures rooted in purpose.
