Press Release

June 4, 2019—SELCO Community Credit Union Awards $50,000 in College Scholarships to 20 Students Throughout Oregon

Awarded to deserving high school seniors, each winner receives a $2,500 college scholarship

(EUGENE, Ore.) — SELCO Community Credit Union has awarded $50,000 in college scholarships to 20 graduating high school seniors throughout Oregon. Each scholarship recipient received $2,500 — up from $1,500 per scholarship in previous years — to use toward college-related expenses. The scholarships are part of SELCO’s mission to aid member-owners in achieving their goals.

SELCO’s Scholarship Committee chose the recipients from applicants representing all 27 Oregon counties that SELCO serves. Recipients were selected based on criteria that included both academic performance and community involvement.

“The recipients are an incredibly accomplished group of students, and the SELCO Scholarship Committee was again impressed with how many deserving applications we received,” said Laura Illig, SELCO’s Vice President of Marketing. “These scholarships are meant to make it easier for students to pursue the next step of their education, and we were proud to be able to increase the value of each scholarship this year. As has been the case since its founding more than 80 years ago, SELCO will continue to make education a key tenet of its mission to help members and their families reach their goals.”

To qualify, recipients had to be graduating from a four-year accredited high school in Oregon, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university. In addition, every applicant was asked to submit an essay that answers the question: “What advice would you give your future self on your college graduation day?”
