SELCO in the Community
SELCO's mission is "to improve our members’ social and economic position." In keeping with this mission, we dedicate financial and volunteer resources to improve the standard of living for our members and enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve.
In 2013 SELCO and its employees provided nearly $300,000 in financial support, and more than 800 hours of volunteer time, to 178 Oregon community organizations. That figure includes $50,000 in college scholarships and classroom mini-grants, in keeping with our heritage of serving educators. It also includes a wide range of charitable causes, particularly those benefitting youth.
In 2014, SELCO will be dedicating our community involvement funding and resources to high impact initiatives where the most critical needs exist. To that end, SELCO will be focused on supporting organizations that improve the health, safety, well-being, and education of children ages 0-18.
Each spring, SELCO awards $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors for continuing education at a four-year college. Scholarship recipients from among SELCO’s membership are chosen based on scholastic achievement and community involvement.
Each fall, SELCO awards Mini-Grants of up to $500 to K-12 educators in our service communities for innovative classroom projects. The SELCO Mini-Grant program began in 1993 as a response to school budget cuts and gives more than $20,000 to local classrooms each year.
